Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region Commemorates the 46th Anniversary of the Signing of the August Agreements

We are marking the 46th anniversary of the historic events thanks to which we live today in a free and democratic country. The first of this year’s commemorative events took place in Grudziądz on 22 August, with the participation of Vice-President of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Parliament Katarzyna Lubańska. Today (31 August), the regional government was represented by Marek Smoczyk, Secretary of the Voivodeship, at the plaque dedicated to the People of Solidarity of the Toruń Region. Further anniversary events in the region will take place on 4 and 6 September.

“The August Agreements marked a turning point. ‘Solidarity’ united people around shared values and the desire for freedom. To this day, they remain an important part of our common history,” emphasises Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The main commemorative events are being held in several cities across the region – Grudziądz, Toruń, Bydgoszcz, Włocławek and Inowrocław – where we pay tribute to the participants of the events of August 1980 and to all those who fought for freedom and workers’ rights.

The programme includes, among other things, ceremonies at plaques and monuments commemorating “Solidarity” activists, Holy Masses for Poland and the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity”, the laying of flowers and candles, speeches, and a ceremonial gala during which the “Solidarity Medals” will be presented.

As is customary, on Friday (28 August) Marshal Piotr Całbecki met with “Solidarity” activists in Przysiek near Toruń.

The signing of the August Agreements in late August and early September 1980 paved the way for the registration of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity”, which became one of the most important centres of democratic opposition to the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic in the 1980s.
