International Landscape Day in Our Landscape Parks

Every year on 20 October, we celebrate International Landscape Day to commemorate the signing of the European Landscape Convention. Non-governmental organizations, local authorities and other institutions take part in the initiative. In the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region, numerous events will be held to mark the occasion, including activities in our landscape parks. This year’s theme is “Discover History in the Landscape!”

International Landscape Day, celebrated on 20 October, was established by the Council of Europe on Poland’s initiative, specifically that of the General Directorate for Environmental Protection, to commemorate the signing of the European Landscape Convention. The day was created to raise public awareness, highlight the value of landscapes in everyday life, encourage reflection on the need for responsible spatial planning, and explore opportunities to restore areas transformed by human activity. Landscapes also bear witness to the history of a place, which is why history and landscape shape and influence one another.

“Landscape parks are the foundation of our region’s natural wealth. International Landscape Day reminds us that protecting these exceptional places is our shared responsibility for the heritage we will pass on to future generations,” says Piotr Całbecki, Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

Across Poland, events marking Landscape Day take place throughout October in every voivodeship. In the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region, landscape parks also regularly participate, offering themed walks, exhibitions and workshops through to November (full list of events). One event worth highlighting is a photography exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of landscape parks in Poland. The country’s first landscape park, Suwałki Landscape Park, was established on 12 January 1976. The exhibition will be on display at the Tuchola Cultural Centre until 30 October.

The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region is home to:

  • 37 protected landscape areas;
  • 13 nature and landscape complexes;
  • 10 landscape parks administered by the regional self-government of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

These are:

  • Brodnicki Landscape Park;
  • Gostynińsko-Włocławski Landscape Park;
  • Górznieńsko-Lidzbarski Landscape Park;
  • Krajeński Landscape Park;
  • Nadgoplański Millennium Landscape Park (Nadgoplański Park Tysiąclecia);
  • Tucholski Landscape Park;
  • Wdecki Landscape Park;
  • The Association of Landscape Parks „Lower Vistula Valley”, which comprises three parks:
    • Chełmno Landscape Park;
    • Łosie Hills Landscape Park;
    • Vistula Landscape Park.

Landscape parks play an important role in preserving and promoting the outstanding natural, historical, cultural and scenic qualities of their areas in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. This means that agricultural activities can be carried out and houses can be built within landscape parks, which also serve an important tourism and recreational function.
