European Week of Regions and Our Workshops in Brussels
Marshal Piotr Całbecki is in Brussels taking part in European Week of Regions and Cities (12–14 October) and the European Committee of the Regions’ plenary session, which is being held at the same time. Among the events bringing together European politicians and local and regional representatives are two-day workshops on the future of European agriculture and the factors shaping global markets, co-organised by our Brussels Regional Office.
European Week of Regions and Cities is the continent’s leading annual event dedicated to regional and urban policy. This year’s discussions focus, among other things, on digital transformation and the applications of generative artificial intelligence, Europe’s technological sovereignty, the European Union’s new budget and the future of cohesion policy, security and resilience to crises, energy efficiency, and the green transformation of cities.
The two-day workshops on the current outlook for agriculture and the factors shaping global markets, which begin today, have been organised jointly with the Forum for the Future of Agriculture, an international platform for public debate on sustainable agriculture, environmental protection and the transformation of Europe’s food system. Participants include representatives of the European Commission, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Bank and the US Department of Agriculture, as well as organisations representing the interests of agricultural landowners and land managers and agriculture-related businesses. The workshops were opened by Elżbieta Piniewska, Chair of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Parliament.
Topics on the agenda of the 173rd plenary session of the European Committee of the Regions include the future of cohesion policy and the EU’s multiannual budget, security, terrorism, resilience to climate change and energy resources, as well as support for Ukrainian partners in the face of the war on our eastern border.
This morning, Marshal Piotr Całbecki took part in a high-level working breakfast attended by Members of the European Parliament, focusing on resilience to disasters and crises. This afternoon, the head of our region is scheduled to participate in a panel entitled “From Heritage to Growth: Revitalising Traditional Ecosystems in Europe’s Regions”, which will explore how regions can harness traditional economic sectors and regional heritage as drivers of modern development.
