Because There Is Nothing More Rewarding Than Saving Someone’s Life

Working as a doctor, nurse or paramedic in an emergency medical team is not for everyone. It is a multidisciplinary profession that requires constantly updated knowledge, psychological resilience, the ability to respond effectively under time pressure, empathy and a strong sense of mission. The emergency medical services system in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region includes the Regional Ambulance Service (WSPR) in Bydgoszcz, as well as emergency medical teams operating within the structures of the Regional Integrated Hospital in Toruń and the Regional Specialist Hospital in Włocławek. Together, their ambulance crews employ more than 400 people.

– Ambulance work is for passionate, dedicated professionals. It requires not only specialist knowledge but also analytical skills and keen powers of observation. Every emergency call is different. You need to remain calm in the face of dramatic accidents and be capable of delivering a baby. On the occasion of the recently celebrated Emergency Medical Services Day, I would like to wish all paramedics, nurses and doctors working in the emergency medical services system every satisfaction in their demanding work, says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

The Regional Ambulance Service (WSPR) in Bydgoszcz, overseen by the regional government, operates 20 emergency medical teams in the Bydgoszcz area (17 basic teams and three specialist teams with a doctor on board, with two additional teams scheduled to enter service in January). It also operates a motorcycle emergency response unit, particularly useful in locations that are difficult to reach by ambulance. The service employs 203 medical professionals (167 paramedics, 19 doctors and 17 nurses). With these resources, it carried out 50,000 emergency responses last year and a further 26,000 in the first half of 2026 alone.

In the Włocławek area, the State Emergency Medical Services system is managed by the regional government’s Father Jerzy Popiełuszko Regional Specialist Hospital. Thirteen emergency medical teams operate here (12 basic teams and one specialist team with a doctor), employing a total of 120 people.

The Toruń area is served by emergency medical teams operated by the regional government’s Regional Integrated Hospital in Toruń. There are 11 teams (10 basic and one specialist), as well as a motorcycle emergency response unit operating seasonally from May to September.

Each basic emergency medical team consists of at least two medical professionals (paramedics and/or emergency medical services nurses), while a specialist team comprises three members, including a doctor specialising in emergency medicine.

The hospital’s emergency medical services also include five medical transport teams. According to the hospital’s report, these teams carried out a total of 30,000 responses.
