Because Surgical Techniques Cannot Be Learned from a Book

Experienced urological surgeons from across Poland gathered at the Oncology Centre in Bydgoszcz for the second edition of its robotic urology workshop. The Bydgoszcz oncology centre, which has ranked among Poland’s leading medical institutions for years, is now the country’s foremost centre for robotic surgery.

“Most of the participants have already been performing robotic surgeries for quite some time. They came here not to see how robotic surgery is done, but to learn how it can be done better,” Dr Krzysztof Kamecki, the centre’s medical director and coordinator of its Clinical Department of Oncological Urology, explained to the centre’s news portal.

The workshops were led by top specialists, including Dr Krzysztof Kamecki, Professor Tomasz Drewa, Professor Artur Antoniewicz, Professor Marcin Słojewski, Dr Łukasz Nyk, Dr Krzysztof Ratajczyk, Dr Bartłomiej Małkowski, Dr Przemysław Skimina and Dr Przemysław Wiśniewski. Over the two days of training, 18 complex oncological urological procedures were performed. Participants were able to observe the operations in real time in the auditorium of the Innovative Medical Forum (IFM) at the Oncology Centre. The opportunity to watch procedures live and ask the operating surgeons questions is one of the most important aspects of workshops of this kind.

The Marshal’s Oncology Centre in Bydgoszcz is a highly regarded specialist medical facility that continues to expand and incorporate the latest advances in global medicine into patient care. One of its most significant investments in recent years has been the establishment of a leading national Centre for Robotic Surgery, equipped with three permanently operational surgical robots.

In 2025, the centre performed 1,200 robotic operations. The total number has now exceeded 3,200.

In recognition of his overall contribution to the advancement of modern oncology and healthcare more broadly, the centre’s director, Professor Janusz Kowalewski, received this year’s Marshal of the Region Award in the field of healthcare.
