Uhlans on Bydgoszcz’s Błonie

Representatives of the authorities, local residents, and descendants of soldiers of the 16th Wielkopolskie Uhlan Regiment, which was stationed in Bydgoszcz before the Second World War, took part last Saturday (25 July) in the regiment’s annual celebration held at Błonie Park in Bydgoszcz. The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region Self-Government was represented by Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski.

Named after Major General Gustaw Orlicz-Dreszer, the regiment was a cavalry unit of the Wielkopolskie Army and later of the armed forces of the Second Polish Republic. It was established on 29 December 1918 in Lwówek on the initiative of Polish former soldiers of the German Army. Following the end of the First World War, the regiment was stationed in Bydgoszcz. During the September Campaign of 1939, it fought in the Chojnice and Tuchola region.

The regiment’s traditions are now carried on by the 7th Pomeranian Coastal Defence Brigade.
