MIChA PAS in Toruń: Research, knowledge transfer, and commercialization of science

The International Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (MIChA PAS) is a newly established, prestigious scientific institution based in Toruń, operating as a research and development center in the fields of health, environmental protection, and food safety. Attending today’s official inauguration were Marshal Piotr Całbecki, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) Prof. Marek Konarzewski, and Director of MIChA Prof. Bogusław Buszewski, a full member of PAS and an outstanding specialist in analytical chemistry.

– Science is the driving force behind economic development. The creation of the institute is a response to the growing importance of analytical chemistry and its applications in the modern world. This field plays a key role, among others, in the development of biomedical technologies, pharmacy, and materials engineering, as well as developing modern methods of analysis and measurement for environmental protection and food safety. I am delighted that the new unit has found its place right here in Toruń. It is both a prestige and a commitment – emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Also today in Toruń, Marshal Piotr Całbecki and PAS President Prof. Marek Konarzewski signed a cooperation agreement for the development of science, scientific research, research and development work, as well as the transfer of knowledge and commercialization of scientific research results in fields connected to the mission of MIChA PAS. In practice, this means, among other things, close collaboration between MIChA and the Jan Czochralski Scientific and Technological Center operating under the regional self-government, including the use of the Czochralski Center’s current and future research infrastructure.

The Institute – which will conduct interdisciplinary research in areas such as environmental protection, food safety, and biomedical innovations – will operate in a network model (headquarters in Toruń and units in Gdańsk, Białystok, Warsaw, Łódź, Lublin, Kraków, Wrocław, and Poznań). Ultimately, it will employ fifty scientific researchers.

Prof. Bogusław Buszewski, an outstanding scientist associated with our region and a specialist in analytical chemistry considered the founder of the Polish school of chromatography (one of the analytical techniques), is a scientific celebrity of international renown. For many years, he headed the Department of Environmental Chemistry and Bioanalytics, as well as the Educational and Research Center for Separation and Bioanalytical Methods at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, both of which he built from scratch. He is among the most frequently cited Polish chemists.

Today’s ceremonial inauguration of the institute was also attended by, among others: Chairwoman of the Regional Assembly Elżbieta Piniewska, Vice Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region Zbigniew Ostrowski, Vice Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region Aneta Jędrzejewska, Member of the Regional Board Marek Wojtkowski, Vice-Chairwoman of the Regional Assembly Katarzyna Lubańska, Deputy Voivode Piotr Hemmerling, Regional Councilor Anna Niewiadomska, Mayor of Toruń Paweł Gulewski, Representative of the Regional Board Grzegorz Borek, President of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Loan Fund Agnieszka Wasita, chemist and member of the international scientific board of MIChA PAS Prof. Teofil Jesionowski, Rector of NCU Prof. Andrzej Tretyn, and the new President of the Czochralski Center, Grzegorz Kaczmarek.
