StodólnaLAB – Modern Education in a Historic Setting
A century-old townhouse on Stodólna Street in Włocławek is set to undergo a major transformation. As part of the creation of a new educational centre established by the Marshal’s Office, the attic will be converted, the basement expanded, the historic staircase restored, the façade renovated, and the interior equipped with state-of-the-art educational spaces and laboratories. A striking glass-roofed courtyard will become the building’s architectural centrepiece. The project is being delivered by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Academy of Innovation (KPAI).
“Our goal is to create a place that preserves Włocławek’s cultural identity while fostering the development of residents’ skills through innovative education. I am delighted that we can present the initial concept for this important project, which spectacularly combines historic architecture with modern design solutions,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The institution will be housed in a building transferred to the Kujawsko-Pomorskie regional government by the Włocławek District Authority last autumn.
The preliminary architectural concept, prepared by Poznań-based OMT Architects following a public tender, envisages a comprehensive modernization of the property, which was built in the 1930s.
In accordance with the recommendations of the heritage conservation authorities, the building’s front façade will be restored to its original Neo-Classical appearance, including the reconstruction of its entrance gate and fence. The courtyard, which will serve as a multifunctional lobby with a café and meeting space, will be enclosed beneath a glass roof.
The previously unused attic will be converted into a fully functional third floor. Two levels will house modern exhibition and educational spaces. The expanded basement and a newly created underground level will accommodate storage facilities as well as technical and staff areas.
The centre’s educational programme will focus on three main thematic areas:
- The Vitamins and Health Zone
- The Sound in Film Zone
- The Industrial Heritage Zone
Each of these areas will be associated with a distinguished figure connected to Włocławek and the region. A team of experts will also be established to provide academic and professional support in developing the educational programme for the new institution.
Construction work is scheduled to begin in spring next year.
The project will be financed largely through the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze (FEdKP) programme, for which the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Academy of Innovation plans to apply in early 2027.
The Academy is also developing modern spaces dedicated to culture, education and science communication in Grudziądz (Młyn Energii – Energy Mill) and Inowrocław (InoLAB).
In addition, KPAI employs and funds educational coordinators at the Copernicus Astro Bases across the region, delivering a unified programme of educational activities for primary and secondary school students. The Academy’s newest initiative is the Kujawsko-Pomorskie School Under Sail.
