Cinematic Kujawy Pomorze: French Cinema in Toruń
The history of the New French Cinema Review at Toruń’s Kino Centrum dates back to 2010 and is closely linked to the activities of the Centre of Contemporary Art “Znaki Czasu” (CoCA) and its collaboration with the French Institute in Poland. The event was established as part of a nationwide project promoting contemporary French cinematography, presented annually across 13 Polish cities. The French Institute in Poland and Unifrance invite you to the upcoming edition of French cinema encounters. This June (10 – 30 June), the most intriguing contemporary French productions can be seen right here in Toruń.
Each edition of the review showcases the most acclaimed French productions of recent seasons – films screened and awarded at festivals in Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, as well as works by both established directors and debutants. The program regularly features contemporary premieres alongside classic titles that recall the rich history of French cinematography. The screenings are frequently accompanied by preview showcases, allowing audiences to watch films ahead of their regular theatrical distribution in Poland. Screenings of French cinema classics also hold a special place in the history of the review. For instance, the 17th edition included Louis Malle’s legendary Elevator to the Gallows (Ascenseur pour l’échafaud) – a film widely considered one of the pioneering works that heralded the French New Wave.
