Poland Without Asbestos – Conference

Vice-Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska today (30 September) took part in the “Removing Asbestos from Under the Thatch” conference, which brought together experts, local government representatives and representatives of state institutions to discuss the key challenges involved in removing asbestos from the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

“Asbestos is an extremely important and complex problem, simultaneously affecting health, environmental protection and the economic situation of residents. The year 2032 is fast approaching, and by then asbestos should have disappeared from our homes and farms. Meanwhile, approximately 610,000 tonnes of asbestos have been inventoried in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region, of which only 140,000 tonnes, or 23 percent, have been removed,” Vice-Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska stressed. “This shows just how enormous a challenge still lies ahead of us. It is particularly important to support residents who often cannot afford to replace asbestos roofing after it has been removed. I am pleased that we can meet today in such a broad group and discuss this issue. I hope that the conference will provide answers to the most important questions and help develop solutions that will bring us closer to our goal of completely removing asbestos from our homes and farms.”

The speakers presented the full procedure for dealing with this hazardous material – from the proper identification and inventorying of asbestos-containing products, through formal oversight, to safe methods of dismantling and disposal. They also highlighted good practices based on examples from specific municipalities.

The event is part of the nationwide “Programme for the Removal of Asbestos from the Country for 2009 – 2032”, under which all materials containing this mineral must be completely withdrawn from use by the end of 2032.
