No Car, No Traffic Jams, No Stress
In just one week, on 22 September (Tuesday), to mark Car-Free Day, passengers will be able to travel free of charge on our regional passenger trains and buses operating on regional routes. The regional government encourages residents to leave their cars at home and use public transport that day.
– All you need are two documents: a valid vehicle registration certificate and an ID card to travel free of charge on the trains and buses covered by the initiative in our region. I encourage everyone to leave their cars at home and choose public transport that day – says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
Free travel will be available throughout the day on all regional trains (Arriva and Polregio) operated on behalf of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie regional government. This year, the initiative has also been extended to public service bus routes financed by the regional government.

Car-Free Day marks the culmination of European Mobility Week, celebrated from 16 to 22 September. Its aim is to encourage people to use public transport or bicycles as alternatives to everyday car journeys.
Our expenditure on rail transport in 2026 will reach a record PLN 267 million. This is 12.5 per cent more than in the previous year. The figure also includes charges for access to railway infrastructure and station fees, amounting to a total of PLN 37 million.
The number of kilometres travelled by our trains will increase by 13 per cent compared with 2025. Over the course of twelve months, they will cover a total of 7.5 million kilometres. It is worth noting that train operations on railway lines in Kujawsko-Pomorskie have been growing steadily for the past four years. We can report an impressive 39 per cent increase.
75 per cent of the trains operating regional passenger services are owned by the regional government. In 2027, seven modern electric trains manufactured by Bydgoszcz-based Pesa will enter service. The trains currently in production are four-car electric multiple units capable of carrying 360 passengers. They will be equipped with facilities making travel easier for wheelchair users, as well as bicycle racks. The purchase is being financed with support from, among others, the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze (FEdKP) 2021–2027 and government grants. The total cost of the seven trains ordered by the regional government is PLN 329 million.
As part of the Car-Free Day celebrations, a Cycling Critical Mass will take place in Toruń on 19 September (Saturday). The ride through the city streets is intended to promote cycling infrastructure. Anyone interested can take part in the event, which will start at 4 p.m. in the New Town Market Square and follow a route of approximately 16 kilometres.
