Father Jerzy’s Death Was Not in Vain

Forty-two years ago, Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, a priest associated with the Solidarity movement, a human rights defender and a blessed of the Catholic Church, was brutally murdered by the communist secret police. Marshal Piotr Całbecki paid tribute to Father Jerzy on Sunday during commemorative ceremonies in Górsk. Today (19 October), representatives of the city and regional authorities, together with members of the clergy, laid flowers at the priest’s monument in Toruń.

“His martyrdom was not in vain. Ultimately, truth will always triumph over lies, hope will overcome doubt, and life will defeat death. The words he made the cornerstone of his teaching, the message of his life and the testament he left to the nation remain as relevant as ever: ‘Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good,’” emphasises Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Sunday’s commemorations in Górsk began with the Stations of the Cross service at the cross monument beside National Road 80, where, 42 years ago, communist security service officers ambushed and abducted the priest before torturing and killing him. Those gathered then attended Holy Mass at the parish church in Górsk. An hour later, the same venue hosted a programme featuring Adam Woronowicz and the Soul band.

Those attending today’s ceremony at Father Jerzy’s monument in Toruń included Marek Smoczyk, Secretary of the Region; Paweł Gulewski, Mayor of Toruń; and Łukasz Walkusz, Chair of the Toruń City Council.
