Expansion of the Pomeranian Philharmonic: Utility Networks and Preparations for the Main Building Renovation Underway
Modernity, original architectural solutions and immersive sound technology combined with the traditional elegance of the neoclassical form of the mid-20th-century building, as well as extensive glazing and abundant greenery – this is what the new Pomeranian Philharmonic complex in Bydgoszcz will look like in three years’ time. The project includes the modernization of the existing building, the construction of two underground levels and a new administration building. Work is already underway.
“The expansion concept is bold, but at the same time it remains deeply respectful of the existing building. A temple of art must also speak through its architectural form. I believe we will achieve this effect,” Marshal Piotr Całbecki said in July during the ceremony marking the signing of the contract with the contractor.
The first underground level will include, alongside the chamber hall, exhibition, leisure and catering spaces. The second underground level will be dedicated to artistic workspaces and areas for musicians to rest. Rehearsal rooms for the symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra and choir, as well as dressing rooms, sectional rehearsal rooms and a staff canteen, will be arranged around green courtyards. This solution will provide access to natural light while creating intimate and comfortable conditions for musicians to work creatively and relax.
Work on clearing and upgrading the gas, electrical and central heating networks around the Philharmonic building is now nearing completion. Inside the building, work is underway to secure elements of the interior that are to be restored, including flooring, interior staircases and columns.
The organ, concert hall seats and chandeliers have already been removed from the concert hall. The dismantling of the wood paneling is also beginning, in accordance with strictly defined procedures. Each element is carefully labeled and secured so that, once the work is complete, it can be returned precisely to its original location.
Acoustic testing is also being carried out at every stage of the project to monitor and protect the concert hall’s exceptional acoustic qualities.
The project is financed from the voivodeship budget and the centrally managed European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment (FEnIKS) 2021–2027 programme. The Pomeranian Philharmonic is being supported in carrying out the project by the Marshal’s Office-owned special-purpose company Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Investments (Kujawsko-Pomorskie Inwestycje Regionalne). The contractor is the Polish company Unibep.
