Community-Based Psychiatry and Day Care – Construction Begins on Our Investment in Bydgoszcz

Marshal Piotr Całbecki, Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski, Regional Councillors Anna Niewiadomska and Katarzyna Stranz-Kaja, and Jarosław Wierski, President of the Marshal’s Office special-purpose company Kujawsko-Pomorskie Medical Investments, attended the groundbreaking ceremony today (28 October) for the future Mental Health Centre, which will operate as part of the Regional Mental Health Outpatient Clinic in Bydgoszcz.

“One in four people experiences a mental health crisis at some point in their lives. This means that mental health problems are one of the major challenges of our time, and that properly organised psychiatric care and suitable conditions for providing this kind of support are matters that affect, or may affect, each and every one of us. We have a shortage of psychiatric day care facilities, which is why this particular area needs to be expanded. We look forward to welcoming you to the centre’s beautiful new building next year,” Marshal Piotr Całbecki said at the construction site today. The Marshal emphasised that the new centre would put the principles of community-based psychiatry into practice.

The three-storey Mental Health Centre in Bydgoszcz is being built on Sułkowskiego Street, directly adjacent to the existing Regional Mental Health Outpatient Clinic building. It will have 2,300 square metres of usable floor space and a volume of 9,000 cubic metres. The third floor will house the psychiatric day unit, which will be able to accommodate 20 patients at a time. The ground floor will include an EMG/EEG laboratory, among other facilities. EEG (electroencephalography) and EMG (electromyography) are key diagnostic tests for assessing the nervous system. Psychiatrists will see patients on the first floor, while psychologists will work on the second floor, which will also contain consultation rooms and group therapy rooms for community-based treatment.

The Regional Mental Health Outpatient Clinic is receiving support with the project from Kujawsko-Pomorskie Medical Investments, a special-purpose company owned by the regional authorities. The contractor is Dolmar, and the contract is worth PLN 16.6 million. The project is being financed through a combination of funding from the regional European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze programme and the clinic’s own resources.
