82nd Anniversary of the Outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising
On the National Day of Remembrance of the Warsaw Uprising (1 August), we will honour the memory of those who took up arms 82 years ago to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. Commemorative events marking the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising will take place across the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region with the participation of representatives of the regional self-government.
Official ceremonies will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, 1 August, in the region’s largest cities:
- Bydgoszcz – at the Warsaw Uprising Monument, at the intersection of Gdańska and Czerkaska Streets;
- Toruń – at the obelisk dedicated to the soldiers of the Home Army in the Park of the 100th Anniversary of Toruń’s Return to a Free Poland;
- Włocławek – at the Monument to the Cichociemni (the Silent Unseen), the Home Army’s elite special operations paratroopers, on Okrzei Street;
- Inowrocław – at the obelisk commemorating Home Army soldiers in Sybiraków Square.
During the ceremony in Bydgoszcz, tribute will also be paid to Colonel Urszula Tauer, nom de guerre “Ala”, a Warsaw Uprising veteran who passed away on 4 July this year.
The commemorations will also include Holy Masses, concerts, exhibitions, and historical re-enactments.
The Warsaw Uprising began on 1 August 1944. Its consequences were devastating: approximately 16,000 insurgents were killed, 20,000 were wounded, and around 200,000 civilians lost their lives. Much of the city was systematically destroyed.
