82nd Anniversary of the Outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising
On the National Day of Remembrance of the Warsaw Uprising (1 August), we honoured the memory of those who took up arms 82 years ago to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. Commemorations marking the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising were held throughout the region, with representatives of the regional government in attendance.
Official ceremonies took place in the largest cities of Kujawy and Pomorze:
- in Bydgoszcz, at the Warsaw Uprising Monument at the junction of Gdańska and Czerkaska streets;
- in Toruń, at the obelisk dedicated to the soldiers of the Home Army in the Park of the Centenary of Toruń’s Return to a Free Poland;
- in Włocławek, at the Monument to the Silent Unseen Paratroopers of the Home Army on Okrzei Street;
- in Inowrocław, at the obelisk commemorating the soldiers of the Home Army in Sybiraków Square.
During the commemorations in Bydgoszcz, tribute was also paid to the late Colonel Urszula Tauer, codename “Ala”, a participant in the Warsaw Uprising who passed away on 4 July this year.
The ceremonies were accompanied by religious services, concerts, exhibitions and historical re-enactments.
The uprising began on 1 August 1944. Its consequences were devastating. Sixteen thousand insurgents were killed, 20,000 were wounded and 200,000 civilians lost their lives. The city was razed to the ground.
