Film in Kujawsko-Pomorskie. “Wajda Reimagined” – An Exhibition of Posters by Andrzej Pągowski in Toruń

The opening of the exhibitions “Wajda Reimagined” and “Wajda Reimagined – Supplement” will take place on Sunday (8 November) at the headquarters of the Tumult Foundation in Toruń. Andrzej Pągowski, the artist behind the posters, will attend the event. Admission is free.

Visitors to Toruń will have the opportunity to admire 74 works by this outstanding Polish graphic designer. The exhibition is divided into two parts, “Wajda Reimagined” and “Wajda Reimagined – Supplement”, featuring posters for films and theatre productions by the acclaimed director, who passed away ten years ago.

– Andrzej Pągowski’s artistic encounter with Andrzej Wajda’s work began in 1981, when the graphic designer was creating a poster for the film Man of Iron. It was then that an artistic relationship was born, resulting in posters for many of the director’s works over the following years, including Danton, Chronicle of Amorous Accidents, The Crowned-Eagle Ring, Walesa: Man of Hope and Afterimage – the organisers of the Toruń exhibition recall. – The poster for Man of Iron holds a special place in this story, as it became Wajda’s favourite among Pągowski’s designs.

The director of Man of Iron even joked that “it was worth making a film for a poster like that.”

The “Wajda Reimagined” project was conceived in 2021, marking the 95th anniversary of Andrzej Wajda’s birth and the fifth anniversary of his death. At that time, Pągowski explored archival film materials, interviews and recollections of actors and collaborators who had worked with the director.

– This resulted in the creation of 60 new posters, forming the “Wajda Reimagined” collection. The only exception was Man of Iron. Given the director’s special attachment to the original poster, Pągowski decided against creating an entirely new interpretation – the Tumult Foundation explains.

Instead, the graphic designer merely adapted the original poster from a horizontal to a vertical format.

In 2026, officially designated the Year of Andrzej Wajda by the Polish Senate, Pągowski decided to continue the project he had launched five years earlier, expanding it to include television theatre productions directed by the master filmmaker. As part of the “Wajda Reimagined – Supplement” series, he created 14 new posters, including those for Hamlet starring Teresa Budzisz-Krzyżanowska, Macbeth starring Tadeusz Łomnicki and Magdalena Zawadzka, another production of Macbeth featuring Iwona Bielska and Krzysztof Globisz, and Bigda idzie! starring Janusz Gajos.

The exhibition opening, attended by Andrzej Pągowski, will take place on Sunday (8 November) at 5 p.m. at the Tumult Foundation headquarters in Toruń’s New Town Market Square. Admission is free.

The exhibition accompanies the 34th edition of the International Film Festival ToruńCamerimage, of which the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship Government is the main partner and co-host. All 74 works will remain on display until the end of February 2027.

2026 – The Year of Andrzej Wajda

One of the greatest directors in the history of world cinema, Andrzej Wajda received an Honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2000 and won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1981 for Man of Iron.

He was born 100 years ago, on 6 March 1926, in Suwałki, and passed away ten years ago, on 9 October 2016, in Warsaw.

At the initiative of the Polish Senate, 2026 has been officially designated the Year of Andrzej Wajda. The anniversary provides an opportunity to rediscover his films and reflect on the significance of his artistic legacy.
