Andrzej Grabowski to Receive the Marshal’s Film Award

One of Poland’s most popular actors, screenwriters and directors will join the ranks of recipients of the Film Award of the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

On 6 November, at the Old Film Festival in Bydgoszcz, he will receive the Pola Negri statuette in recognition of his lifetime artistic achievement.

Andrzej Grabowski was born on 15 March 1952 in Chrzanów. He graduated from the State Higher School of Theatre in Kraków in 1974. He has performed on the stages of the Old Theatre in Kraków, the Ludwik Solski Theatre in Tarnów, Kraków’s STU Theatre and the Grand Theatre in Warsaw. His longest association, however, has been with the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków, where he worked in 1974–1975 and 1979–1992, before returning in 1997 and continuing to perform there to this day.

Audiences have enjoyed his performances in productions including Stanisława Przybyszewska’s The Danton Case, directed by Jerzy Krasowski (1975); Stanisław Wyspiański’s The Wedding, directed by Mikołaj Grabowski (1984); Václav Havel’s Temptation, directed by Krzysztof Jędrysek (1990); William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, directed by Jerzy Goliński (1990); and Nikolai Gogol’s Marriage, directed by Maciej Sobociński (2004). He also appeared in Andrzej Wajda’s production of The Wedding at the Old Theatre (1991), as well as Bogusław Schaeffer’s Quartet for Four Actors, directed by Mikołaj Grabowski at the STU Theatre (1991).

In 1986, he won the Grand Prix at the National Festival of One-Actor Theatre in Toruń for his solo performance Audition V by Bogusław Schaeffer.

His role as Ferdynand Kiepski in the cult Polish sitcom Świat według Kiepskich (The World According to the Kiepskis), broadcast by Polsat from 1999 to 2022, secured his place in television history. He made his screen debut in 1972 with a small role in the series Odejścia, powroty (Departures, Returns). His film and television credits include dozens of roles, among them appearances in Boża podszewka, directed by Izabella Cywińska; We’re All Christs, directed by Marek Koterski; The Career of Nikos Dyzma, directed by Jacek Bromski; Pitbull, directed by Patryk Vega; Mr Kuka’s Advice, directed by Dariusz Gajewski; Little Moscow, directed by Waldemar Krzystek; Demon, directed by Marcin Wrona; and Spoor, directed by Agnieszka Holland.

He has also appeared in Seasons (2024), directed by Michał Grzybowski, and The Road Less Travelled (2026), directed by Zuzanna Grabowska. Both films were made in partnership with our Kujawy Pomorze Film Fund.

Grabowski is equally at home on stage, combining acting with singing and stand-up comedy. His cabaret performances attract large audiences across Poland. He has also released four solo albums of songs: Mam prawo… czasami… banalnie (2010), Cudne jest nudne (2013), Pechy i peszki (2019) and Łagodnie (2021).

His two daughters, Zuzanna and Katarzyna, are actresses. His brother, Mikołaj Grabowski, is a renowned theatre director and actor.
