Your Blood Can Save a Life
Despite advances in medicine, no substance has yet been developed that can fully replace human blood. On Thursday (17 September), a special mobile blood donation unit of the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Bydgoszcz will be stationed at Teatralny Square in front of the Marshal’s Office in Toruń, where people will be able to donate blood voluntarily. We repeat the campaign every third Thursday of the month.

Who can become a donor?
Blood may be donated by healthy adults up to the age of 65 who have no symptoms of infection and weigh at least 50 kilograms. Anyone wishing to donate blood should bring a photo ID confirming their identity and PESEL number. During the 24 hours before donating blood, donors should drink approximately 2 litres of fluids (mineral water, juices), be well rested and get enough sleep, eat a light meal, avoid animal fats where possible, limit smoking and refrain from drinking alcohol, including on the day before the donation.
Blood donation is safe – only single-use equipment is used, so there is no risk of infection with blood-borne viruses. A visit to the mobile unit begins with completing a questionnaire and registration, followed by the collection of a blood sample and a medical examination. The blood collection itself takes around 5–10 minutes. Usually one unit of whole blood, i.e. 450 ml, is collected. This is followed by a 15-minute rest, after which the donor receives a caloric equivalent in the form of chocolate and juice. The mobile unit of the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre will be stationed in the square in front of the Marshal’s Office on Thursday (17 September). Staff will be available from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
In 2026, blood donation sessions in front of the Marshal’s Office will also take place on:
- 15 October,
- 19 November,
- 17 December.
According to the Statistical Office in Bydgoszcz, there are more than 33,000 voluntary blood donors in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region – nearly 2 percent of the region’s population.
