No Car, No Traffic Jams, No Stress

In just one week, on 22 September, to mark Car-Free Day, passengers will be able to travel free of charge on our regional passenger trains and buses operating on regional routes. The regional government encourages residents to leave their cars at home and use public transport on that day.

– All you need are two documents: a valid vehicle registration certificate and an identity card. Presenting them at a ticket office or to the conductor will entitle you to a ticket for free rail and bus travel in our region. I encourage everyone to leave their cars at home and take advantage of our offer – says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Free travel will be available throughout the day on regional trains operated under contracts commissioned by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie regional government. This year, the initiative has also been extended to include public service bus routes financed by the regional government.

Car-Free Day marks the culmination of European Mobility Week, held from 16 to 22 September. Its aim is to encourage people to use public transport and other forms of mobility as alternatives to everyday car journeys.

Affordable rail travel in the region is available every day thanks to the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Fare. Passengers pay PLN 4.90 for the first 10 kilometres and PLN 0.2563 for each additional kilometre. With this solution, we encourage passengers to choose railways, not just roads.

Our spending on rail transport in 2026 will reach a record PLN 267 million. This is 12.5 per cent more than in the previous year. The amount also includes charges for access to railway infrastructure and station fees, totalling PLN 37 million.

The number of kilometres travelled by our trains will increase by 13 per cent compared with 2025. Over twelve months, they will cover a total of 7.5 million kilometres. It is also worth noting that train operating performance on railways in Kujawsko-Pomorskie has been steadily increasing for the past four years. We can now report an impressive 39 per cent increase.

75 per cent of trains providing regional passenger services are owned by the regional government. In 2027, seven modern electric trains manufactured by Pesa in Bydgoszcz will enter service. The trains currently being produced are four-car electric multiple units with capacity for 360 passengers, equipped with facilities for wheelchair users and bicycle racks. The purchase is being financed, among other sources, with funding from the European Funds for Kujawsko-Pomorskie (FEdKP) 2021–2027 programme and government grants. The total cost of the seven trains ordered by the regional government is PLN 329 million.
