Great Bee Day

They pollinate the flowers of fruit trees and shrubs, vegetables and many other plants. On Great Bee Day (8 August), we highlight the important role these insects play in maintaining the biodiversity of ecosystems. One of our contributions to protecting biodiversity is the apiary on the roof of the Marshal’s Office, home to five bee colonies.

– Honey bees play a very important role in the ecosystem by helping to sustain biodiversity. On the occasion of Great Bee Day, I would like to extend my best wishes to all beekeepers who care for the welfare of these extremely valuable insects, as well as to naturalists and all residents of the region whose responsible behaviour helps protect the environment, emphasises Marshal Piotr Całbecki, himself a keen beekeeper.

Five bee colonies, numbering around 120,000 bees in total, live on the roof of the Marshal’s Office in Toruń. This year, we harvested 100 kilograms of high-quality honey, produced mainly from maple nectar, with smaller amounts of linden and acacia nectar this season.

Its quality is regularly tested by the relevant authorities and consistently receives very high ratings. Honey from the Marshal’s Office apiary is placed in specially designed jars and is one of the regional gifts used to promote the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region. During the season, the bees are not fed with sugar or syrup.

Our bee colonies are cared for by Tomasz Paul of the Paul Apiary in Gniewkowo.

Through play and education, we also teach children about the important role pollinating insects play in nature.

For many years, the regional government has supported the beekeeping community, recognising its importance for protecting biodiversity, maintaining ecological balance, and supporting the development of agriculture and fruit growing in the region.

This year, beekeepers have received further support of PLN 500,000 from the regional budget. The funding will be used to increase the resilience of bee colonies to disease through the purchase and distribution of a specialised high-protein feed mixture in the form of bee fondant. The support will cover 68,327 bee colonies across the region.
