Blood Donors Welcome This Thursday

Despite advances in medicine, no substance has yet been created that can fully replace human blood. On Thursday (21 May), a special mobile donation unit operated by the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Bydgoszcz will be stationed at Theatre Square (Plac Teatralny) in front of the Marshal’s Office building in Toruń, where people will be able to donate blood voluntarily.

“Your blood can save someone’s health or life. I appeal to everyone who is able to take part in our campaign,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Who can become a donor?

Blood may be donated by healthy adults up to 65 years of age who show no signs of infection and weigh at least 50 kilograms. Anyone wishing to donate should bring an identity document with a photograph and PESEL number.

Before donating blood, donors should drink around two litres of fluids within 24 hours before donation (preferably water or juice), get enough sleep and arrive well rested, eat a light meal, avoid fatty foods, especially animal fats, limit smoking and avoid alcohol consumption, including on the day before donation.

Blood donation is completely safe. Only single-use equipment is used, which eliminates the risk of infection from blood-borne viruses.

A visit to the donation vehicle begins with completing a questionnaire and registration, followed by a blood sample collection and medical examination. The blood collection itself takes approximately 5-10 minutes, during which one unit of whole blood – usually 450 ml – is collected. Afterwards, donors rest for about 15 minutes and receive a caloric refreshment package consisting of chocolate and juice.

The mobile blood donation unit from the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre will be parked outside the Marshal’s Office on Thursday, 21 May. Staff will be available from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
