“They Created Our History” – Congratulations to the Winners!

The winners of the regional Professor Elżbieta Zawacka competition “They Created Our History” have been announced. The competition jury selected the laureates from among the authors of nearly fifty submitted works. Regional Councilor Anna Niewiadomska took part in today’s (12 May) awards gala.

“Participation in the competition is an excellent opportunity to develop historical knowledge about our region and to document local history based on witnesses’ memories, as well as photographs and memorabilia preserved in family and public archives,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki. “I would like to thank everyone for the submitted works and congratulate the winners!”

The competition jury awarded the following prizes:

  • Category: Students of Grades 6-8 of Primary Schools

1st place: Igor Dziczkaniec, Franciszek Żwirko and Stanisław Wigura Primary School in Grzywna (Toruń County)

2nd place: Kacper Krychowiak, John Paul II Primary School in Lubań (Włocławek County)

3rd place: Jan Budziński, School and Preschool Complex in Ostrowite (Rypin County)

  • Category: Students of General Secondary Schools, Technical Schools, and Vocational Schools

1st place: Julia Białkowska, Secondary School Complex in Wąbrzeźno

2nd place: Kacper Szeliga, Jan Kasprowicz I Secondary School with Bilingual Classes in Inowrocław

3rd place: Igor Węglerski, Secondary School Complex in Wąbrzeźno

The competition entries addressed one of the following themes: “About People,” “About Events,” “Family Album,” “Faces of Everyday Life,” “The Participation and Role of Residents of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region in Contemporary Events,” “Assistance Provided by Poles to Jews During the German Occupation in World War II,” and “My School and Its Teachers.”

The competition was organized by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Self-Government and the General Brigadier Professor Elżbieta Zawacka Pedagogical Library in Toruń, in cooperation with the Education Superintendent’s Office in Bydgoszcz, the General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation, the Pomeranian Home Army Archive and Museum, and the Women’s Military Service organization in Toruń.

The competition’s patron is Elżbieta Zawacka – an outstanding educator, social activist, brigadier general of the Polish Army, Home Army soldier during World War II, participant in the Warsaw Uprising, emissary of the commander-in-chief of the Union of Armed Struggle to the Polish government-in-exile in London, and the only woman among the Cichociemni special operatives. After the war, she became a victim of Stalinist imprisonment.
