Year of Kujawsko-Pomorskie people of cinema: Polish Cinema for Young Audiences in Toruń
More than 30 Polish films – from the latest productions to classics by Andrzej Wajda – and 21 locations on Poland’s cinematic map. The 22nd edition of Polish Cinema for Young Audiences, a nationwide project of the Polish Filmmakers Association, is getting underway. For more than two decades, the initiative has been introducing children and young people to the world of Polish cinema. In Toruń, screenings and events will take place at the Artus Court Cultural Centre.
Polish Cinema for Young Audiences is an initiative demonstrating that films for younger audiences can be intelligent, bold and engaging at the same time. The project goes beyond simply presenting film stories. Its aim is also to develop imagination, sensitivity and conscious participation in culture. An important part of Polish Cinema for Young Audiences is a series of free screenings organised for school and preschool groups. For many years, the programme has combined film screenings with educational activities – literary and animation workshops, as well as meetings with filmmakers, actors and writers.
The Polish Cinema for Young Audiences programme was launched in 2004 on the initiative of the Children’s and Youth Film Section of the Polish Filmmakers Association, now operating as the Young Audiences Film Section. The project was conceived by Andrzej Jasiewicz, the Section’s long-serving chairman. From the outset, the initiative has promoted Polish cinema and encouraged active and conscious participation in cultural life. Over more than 20 years, Polish Cinema for Young Audiences has attracted over 150,000 young viewers, who have watched several hundred Polish and international films in cinemas.
This year’s edition features more than 30 Polish films, ranging from contemporary productions to works forming part of Poland’s cinematic heritage. In Toruń, the project provides an opportunity to experience film stories together and to develop the artistic and cultural interests of the city’s youngest residents.
