Year of Film People: Forum “Cultural Heritage Through Film”
Actors, directors, screenwriters, cinematographers and other film professionals who have left their mark on the history of Polish cinema – Kujawy and Pomorze has produced its share of notable figures in film. The Year of Film People from Kujawy and Pomorze offers a perfect opportunity to revisit their work and explore the region’s history through the lens of cinema. How can film tell the story of the past, shape collective memory and help us discover regional identity? These are some of the questions that participants will explore during the second edition of the History and Education Forum, “The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region: Past and Present. Cultural Heritage Through Film.”
The event is organised by the Marshal’s Office of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region in Toruń and the Faculty of Historical Sciences at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. This year’s edition forms part of the celebrations of the Year of Film People from Kujawy and Pomorze, offering an opportunity to consider film not only as an art form, but also as an important tool for documenting and bringing history to a wider audience.
Film can serve as a unique record of its time. It captures places, people, customs and events, while allowing future generations to view the past from new perspectives. During the Forum, participants will discuss the role of cinema in shaping historical memory and regional identity, while learning more about prominent filmmakers connected with Kujawy and Pomorze.
The programme will feature expert discussions, academic lectures and an Oxford-style debate for young people. Workshops on modern approaches to education will also form an important part of the event. Participants will explore how artificial intelligence, storytelling, gamification and critical-thinking methods can be used in teaching.
A special programme has been prepared for young people aged 12 and over. Lectures, workshops, film screenings, an outdoor educational game and interactive activities will offer engaging ways to discover the history and heritage of Kujawy and Pomorze. The region’s cinematic heritage will provide a starting point for exploring its broader historical and cultural context.
The Forum is also aimed at teachers, regional history enthusiasts, museum professionals, representatives of cultural institutions, educators and anyone with an interest in history and film. The event will provide a platform for sharing experiences and presenting ideas for modern approaches to regional education.
The programme will also include a range of accompanying activities. Participants will be able to visit stands hosted by institutions and organisations involved in historical and regional education, explore exhibitions, discover new technologies and take part in activities prepared by the Forum’s partners.
The event will take place on 16 October 2026 at the Collegium Humanisticum of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, 1 Bojarskiego Street. The Forum will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
