Film-inspired premiere at the Musical Theatre in Toruń
“Waiters’ Tango” is the title of the new production at the Musical Theatre. Audiences will be transported to the now-vanished world of cafés, restaurants, and theatre garden venues of old Toruń.
“It is a colorful musical story full of humor, emotions, and plot twists, evoking the atmosphere of Toruń’s long-gone cafés, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The performance is enriched with film projections and well-known Polish hits performed by actors and a live band,” the Musical Theatre announces.
The story takes place in 1901. One of the main characters—Hanka Kruk—quits her job as a maid at the Hotel Victoria and decides to try her luck in the male-dominated profession of waitressing. At the same time, the audience follows the story of Hela Burch, who collaborates with the police to uncover irregularities in local dining establishments. Her relationship with Commissioner Leon Kaparski quickly turns into a passionate affair. The narrative is complemented by two unemployed actors, Felicja and Lubomir, who reveal behind-the-scenes aspects of cultural life in early 20th-century Toruń.
The director and scriptwriter is Jakub Przebindowski. The cast, performing for over two hours (with an intermission), includes Marta Burdynowicz, Katarzyna Dmoch, Krzysztof Godlewski, Katarzyna Jamróz, Michał Słomka, Rafał Szatan, Julia Turczynowicz-Suszycka, and Michał Zacharek. Most of the actors are well known to Toruń audiences, including from the popular production “Excentrycy.” The poster for the performance was created by renowned graphic artist and painter Rafał Olbiński.

The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Musical Theatre was established in 2014 and is one of the youngest cultural institutions run by the regional government. It is based in the Dąmbski Palace at 8 Żeglarska Street.
