From 27 to 31 May, young pianists from around the world are showcasing their skills during the 33rd International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia (Golub-Dobrzyń County). The first auditions took place yesterday (28 May). For three decades, the competition has brought together music lovers from across the globe and is traditionally held in the place where Fryderyk Chopin spent two summer holidays. The event receives financial support from the regional government of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

The young pianists compete in three age groups. On Thursday, 28 May, auditions were held for the third age group (participants born between 2010 and 2012). After listening to the performances of 16 contestants, the jury decided to award the following prizes and distinctions:

• Adam Muszyński (Poland)
• Elena Neumann (Germany)
• Yihan Sheng (China)

The contestants are evaluated by an international jury composed of Professor Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń (Chair of the Jury, Academy of Music in Poznań), Professor Beata Bilińska (Academy of Music in Katowice), Professor Paweł Wakarecy (Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz), Professor Xin Wang (China, Artistic Director of the Euregio Piano Award Competition), and Professor Ingolf Wunder (Austria/Switzerland, The Art Of The Piano). All competition auditions are streamed live on the Chopin Centre’s YouTube channel.

This year’s competition features a total of 55 young pianists up to the age of 16, representing 19 countries across four continents. The young artists come from Australia, Belgium, Belarus, China, the Czech Republic, France, Hong Kong, Iceland, Japan, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Poland, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy. The event was inaugurated on 27 May with a concert by Italian pianist Leonardo Colafelice at St. Catherine’s Church in Golub-Dobrzyń.

The final results of the competition will be announced during the open-air Laureates’ Concert, which will take place on 31 May at 12:00 p.m. in front of the Chopin Centre building in Szafarnia.
