Modern Communication Systems on Our Trains

The electric multiple units owned by the regional government (ED72 and EN76 series) have been equipped with a modern GSM-R radio communication system. The investment improves safety and brings the regional passenger rolling stock into line with current railway standards.

Equipping trains with the GSM-R system improves the safety of railway operations and is also an important step towards adapting the regional fleet to modern requirements – says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

GSM-R is a digital railway radio communication system and one of the key components of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). It enables secure and reliable communication between train drivers and traffic controllers, as well as the transmission of data required for the safe operation of rail traffic.

The investment cost the regional government nearly PLN 2 million. The project was carried out by Pyrylandia, which installed 20 multi-system radio units (VHF/GSM-R) in 10 vehicles.

The project also included compatibility tests of the equipment with the digital railway communication network, certification procedures for each vehicle series, and obtaining the necessary authorisations for the vehicles to operate on the railway network.

The regional government currently has a fleet of 33 trains. Next year, additional units manufactured by Bydgoszcz-based Pesa will enter service. The seven trainsets ordered by the regional government have a total value of PLN 330 million.

In 2026, subsidies provided by the regional government to the railway operators selected through tender procedures – Arriva and Polregio – amount to a record PLN 267 million. This amount also includes the costs of access to railway infrastructure and station charges, totalling PLN 37 million.
