Local government is a school of democracy

Julia Grabowska, a student of the 1st General Secondary School in Szubin, won the 22nd edition of the Regional Knowledge Competition on Local Government, held today (April 27) at the Marshal’s Office in Toruń. The finalists were congratulated by Chairwoman of the Regional Assembly Elżbieta Piniewska, Voivodeship Councillor Katarzyna Stranz-Kaja, and Urszula Chaberska from the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Superintendent of Education.

By taking part in this competition, you become students in the school of democracy, which means citizens co-deciding on what happens in the region,” emphasized President Elżbieta Piniewska in her address to participants.

Ten students—the authors of the best essays selected by the regional organizing committee—took part in the final. Participants presented their work and answered questions from the competition jury.

Competition results:

1st place – Julia Grabowska, 1st General Secondary School in Szubin
2nd place – Wojciech Miklas, Salesian Society General Secondary School in Bydgoszcz
3rd place – Tomasz Hałas, 1st General Secondary School in Szubin

Distinctions:

  • Olgierd Pawłowski – 1st General Secondary School in Żnin
  • Jan Topolski – School Complex in Dobrzejewice, General Secondary School
  • Wiktoria Jurczenia – 9th General Secondary School in Toruń

The Youth Regional Parliament Award of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship was presented to Aleksandra Karczewska from the 9th General Secondary School in Toruń.

The best works received financial prizes, with recognition given both to students and to the teachers who supervised their projects.

In this year’s edition, upper secondary school students prepared written papers and multimedia presentations on one of three topics:

  • Herstories in the local government life of Kujawsko-Pomorskie – women of courage in local governance
  • Local government experience in regional film funds and other forms of cooperation with creative industries
  • Participatory budgeting and other forms of civic participation in municipalities as tools supporting the development of local communities

  • Dorota Sylwestrzak – Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń

  • Andrzej Mazur – Copernicus Library in Toruń

The event was also attended by Voivodeship Councillors Anna Niewiadomska and Robert Malinowski.
