On Friday (April 24), Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski, and Voivodeship Councillors Katarzyna Stranz-Kaja and Anna Niewiadomska took part in the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz. During the event held at the Copenicanum building, Prof. Józef Kubik, PhD, Eng.—rector of the university in 2006–2012—was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa.

“In recognition of your research achievements, impressive publication record, and commitment to developing cooperation between academic communities in Poland and abroad, your work deserves special appreciation. I thank you for the consistency, passion, and dedication with which you carry out innovative research projects and scientific initiatives. Your activity is an inspiration for future generations of researchers, and its results bring tangible benefits not only to science but to society as a whole,” wrote Marshal Piotr Całbecki in a letter addressed to Prof. Józef Kubik.

On the occasion of the anniversary, the university rector, Prof. Bernard Mendlik, received the “Głownia Laski Przewodniczącej Sejmiku,” which was presented during the evening gala (April 24) by Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski.

“In recognition of the merits and dynamic development of Kazimierz Wielki University, the President of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Parliament, Elżbieta Piniewska, decided to honour the university with her highest distinction—the Głownia Laski Przewodniczącej Sejmiku. May the laurel leaves adorning it symbolise the glory of the university as well—a symbol it will carry into the coming decades for the benefit of new generations of students, the residents of Bydgoszcz, and the entire region. On the occasion of the anniversary, I wish you courage in thinking, consistency in action, and endless curiosity about the world,” said Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski.

Professor Józef Kubik is one of Poland’s distinguished scholars in the field of mechanics. He graduated from Poznań University of Technology, obtained his PhD in technical sciences in mechanics in 1972, and in 1982 earned his habilitation in the mechanics of porous materials. From 1996 to 2020, he was affiliated with the Bydgoszcz university, serving two terms as rector (2006–2012). Thanks to his efforts, a department and later the Institute of Mechanics and Applied Computer Science were established. His scientific output includes over 240 publications. He supervised 5 PhD students, 80 master’s theses, and 60 engineering theses.

The awarding of the honorary doctorate to Prof. Józef Kubik is part of the university’s 20th anniversary celebrations. The act establishing Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz was passed by the Polish Parliament in 2005, though the tradition of higher education in the city dates back further. The university is the successor of institutions including the Teacher Training College (1969–1974), the Higher School of Pedagogy (1974–2000), and the Bydgoszcz Academy (2000–2005).
