Colonel Urszula Tauer, code name “Ala”, has passed away.

With deep sadness, we received the news of the death of Colonel Urszula Tauer “Ala” – a resident of Bydgoszcz, a soldier of the Home Army, a participant in the Warsaw Uprising, and one of the oldest residents of our region.

Born in Lviv and connected with Bydgoszcz from childhood, during World War II she was active in the resistance movement as a liaison officer and courier for the Union of Armed Struggle and the Home Army. Using the pseudonym “Ala”, she carried out dangerous courier missions, also reaching Berlin. During the Warsaw Uprising, she was wounded, and after its fall she was sent to the transit camp in Pruszków.

In 2021, at the Civil Registry Office in Bydgoszcz, Ms. Urszula Tauer received the Medal of the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis from Vice-Marshal Zbigniew Ostrowski.

In April this year, she celebrated her 105th birthday. The jubilee had a special character – by decision of the Minister of National Defence, she was promoted to the rank of colonel, as a mark of highest recognition for her wartime merits and unwavering attitude.

“Her life was a testimony to courage, service, and boundless devotion to the homeland. She will remain for future generations a symbol of patriotism, honour, and loyalty to values,” emphasized Piotr Całbecki, Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.
