Social Services Closer to Residents: Pruszcz Opens New Social Services Centre
A building that has served local residents for many years has been given a new purpose. The former distillery, later used as a place of worship and for sports activities, has been revitalised and extended with a modern wing. From today, it houses the Social Services Centre, which will serve the local community and respond to residents’ needs.
Marshal of the Region Piotr Całbecki, Vice-President of the Regional Parliament Przemysław Sznajdrowski and Regional Councillor Tadeusz Pogoda attended today’s opening ceremony for the new premises of the Pruszcz Municipal Social Services Centre in Świecie County. Social Services Centres (CUS) are new organisational units established by municipalities and new local social policy institutions designed to develop and integrate local social services. We support their establishment using EU funds administered by the regional authorities.
The ceremony was hosted by Dariusz Wądołowski, Mayor of Pruszcz. Also attending were Magdalena Jaworska, Director of the Social Services Centre, and Member of Parliament Iwona Karolewska.
“Social Services Centres are an important element of modern social policy. Their purpose is not only to respond to residents’ problems, but above all to reach people in need of support, including those who are often lonely and overlooked by those around them. This is a new form of assistance based on empathy, cooperation and actively seeking out people who need care. We want to ensure that no one feels left to fend for themselves. We are also working to ensure that the EU’s next financial framework, covering the period after 2027, provides opportunities for continued funding and further development of these centres,” emphasised Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The Pruszcz centre is one of 20 facilities to have received support from the regional European Funds for Kujawsko-Pomorskie programme to organise and deliver their statutory activities. The grant amounted to nearly PLN 7.5 million. As part of the project, the former Municipal Centre for Culture, Sport and Recreation was redeveloped. The facility occupies a revitalised building that once housed a brewery. The historic walls of the building, which previously served as a distillery and later as a church, have been complemented by a modern, glass-fronted extension. The Pruszcz Municipal Social Services Centre has been operating since 2025.
These centres focus primarily on helping individuals and families experiencing difficult life circumstances, but their remit is broader and their services are available to all residents of a municipality. Their role is to integrate a range of social services, including support for older people, people with disabilities and families, while making assistance, preventive programmes and cultural activities more accessible.
There are 21 such centres in our region. Toruń has also established a Social Services Centre, whose development was funded under the previous EU financial framework through our regional programme and the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development (POWER). The city has now received almost PLN 7 million from the European Funds for Kujawsko-Pomorskie programme to support its operation.
