Film-Friendly Kujawy and Pomorze: The Medical Drama Doctors Coming to Netflix
The medical drama Doctors, filmed in Toruń, will be available on Netflix from 28 October.
Under a licensing agreement, approximately 450 hours of TVN programmes, films and series will be added to Netflix, including Magda M., Agatha’s Law (Prawo Agaty), Letters to Santa (Listy do M.) and Doctors (Lekarze).
The latter series was broadcast by TVN between 2012 and 2014. A total of 65 episodes were produced over five seasons. Doctors is set in Toruń, with most of the action taking place in the modern Copernicus Hospital, portrayed on screen by the Park Exhibition Centre on Bydgoska Road.
The main character is Alicja Szymańska, a young and ambitious surgeon. After her application for a residency in Warsaw is rejected and she goes through a painful breakup with her fiancé, she decides to change her life and move to Toruń. Interestingly, the series was initially intended to be called Alicja’s Hospital (Szpital Alicji). The role was played by Magdalena Różczka, who later received the Film Award of the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region.

Alongside Różczka, Doctors featured some of Poland’s leading actors, including Paweł Małaszyński, Jacek Koman, Danuta Stenka, Katarzyna Bujakiewicz, Agnieszka Więdłocha, Szymon Bobrowski, Marcin Perchuć, Borys Szyc, Olga Bołądź and Piotr Polk.
In addition to dealing with challenging medical cases and fighting to save patients’ lives, the characters face complicated personal relationships, intrigue and family secrets.
Doctors provided excellent publicity for Toruń. The city even rose to second place in Poland in terms of the media exposure generated by so-called city placement. Dr Alicja’s fictional home was located at 10 Łazienna Street. The riverside boulevard and Kępa Bazarowa island were her favourite routes for morning jogs. Alicja also went running across the old Józef Piłsudski Bridge. The wedding of the main characters was filmed in a small church in Kaszczorek.
Interestingly, the rights to broadcast Doctors were purchased by China’s public broadcaster CCTV, which reaches an audience of approximately one billion viewers. Spanish-language television channels in the United States also acquired the series.
