Year of Kujawsko-Pomorskie people of cinema: “WAJDA: re-wizje” in Bydgoszcz and Wąbrzeźno

Andrzej Wajda is one of the most important figures in Polish cinema. He is the only Polish filmmaker to have received an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement. The centenary of Andrzej Wajda’s birth is an opportunity not only to recall his most important films, but above all to take a fresh look at his body of work. This is precisely the aim of the nationwide series “WAJDA: re-wizje. A Review of Andrzej Wajda’s Films on the 100th Anniversary of His Birth”, organised by the Association of Art-House Cinemas. From March to December 2026, audiences at art-house cinemas can watch ten films directed by Wajda.

Rather than offering a conventional retrospective, the organisers propose a new reading of Wajda’s films from the perspective of today’s viewer. Works created at different moments in Poland’s post-war history are set against contemporary experiences and questions. In this way, films often associated with the canon of Polish cinema can also speak to younger audiences. The “WAJDA: re-wizje” programme was designed to highlight this diversity. Alongside films regarded as part of the core canon, it also includes titles that can be rediscovered and reinterpreted today.

Each month brings a different film. The programme has been arranged not only chronologically, but also according to themes, mood and the time of year. The series began in March with Ashes and Diamonds. Audiences have already seen The Wedding, Innocent Sorcerers, Man of Marble, The Birch Wood and Chronicle of Amorous Accidents.

September focuses on wartime themes with Landscape After the Battle. This 1970 film tells the story of people who survived the war but are unable to leave it behind. The fate of its characters becomes a story about trauma, memory and the difficulty of returning to a normal life.

On 23 September, the film will be screened for audiences in Bydgoszcz at the Orzeł Cinema and for residents of Wąbrzeźno at the Wąbrzeźno Cultural Centre. Both screenings begin at 6 p.m.

The programme will also feature Without Anaesthesia, The Promised Land and Everything for Sale.

An important aspect of the project is also the return to the experience of watching classic films on the big screen. The films are presented in digitally restored versions. Screenings organised as part of the Association of Art-House Cinemas initiative take place in more than 80 art-house cinemas across Poland. At some venues, the screenings are also accompanied by meetings and discussions with people connected with the individual films.
