Przeźrocza Festival: Film Award for Marian Opania

Bydgoszcz will once again become a meeting place for cinema, art and cinematic exploration. The 12th edition of the Przeźrocza Film Festival will take place from 29 August to 5 September 2026. This year’s motto, “Nothing More – Nic Więcej”, heralds an event that goes beyond the framework of a traditional film festival. The festival has been organised since 2015, and since 2022 its formula has been distinctly interdisciplinary. Film meets music, visual arts, lectures, walks and discussions.

One of the most distinctive features of Przeźrocza is its combination of film classics with the latest cinema. The organisers invite both renowned filmmakers and young artists searching for their own creative language. Przeźrocza offers more than screenings alone. The festival encourages audiences to participate actively and to discover cinema through conversation, encounters and experiencing the urban space. Przeźrocza is also a festival strongly rooted in Bydgoszcz. Its main venue is the Orzeł Cinema at the Municipal Cultural Centre, although individual events are also held at other locations across the city.

In 2026, audiences will be able to see nearly 50 screenings. The programme includes both contemporary films and works that have already become part of cinema history. Scheduled events include screenings of Andrzej Wajda’s “Man of Iron”, Rob Reiner’s “This Is Spinal Tap” and Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation”.

On Saturday, 5 September, Marian Opania will receive the “Classic of the Genre” – the Film Award of the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship – at Rother’s Mills in Bydgoszcz, in recognition of his timeless performance in Andrzej Wajda’s “Man of Iron”.

Polish cinema also holds a special place in the programme. One of the events of this year’s edition will be a screening of Maciej Cuske’s “Candidates for Death”, followed by a meeting with the director. This direct contact between filmmakers and audiences is one of the foundations of the festival. The film was made with the support of our Kujawy Pomorze Film Fund.

Festival events take place at various venues across Bydgoszcz, while the programme also reaches beyond the city. This year’s opening is scheduled to take place at the Żnin Sugar Factory. It will feature a screening of “La petite mort” by Martyna Byczkowska and Kaja Zalewska, a meeting with the filmmakers, as well as a 35 mm screening of “Mr Kaziu and His Projectors”. At a time when most films are watched on computer screens, phones and streaming platforms, film stock, a projector, a cinema auditorium and the shared experience of watching a film together become the essence of the festival experience.

An important element of Przeźrocza is the “Blink of an Eye” competition, aimed at creators of short films. The competition offers an opportunity to discover artists who are often only at the beginning of their professional careers. As a result, Przeźrocza is not solely a festival of retrospectives and meetings with established filmmakers.

The 12th Przeźrocza Film Festival will take place in Bydgoszcz from 29 August to 5 September 2026.
