Nawra Today

Marshal Piotr Całbecki today invited journalists from regional media outlets to visit the former Sczaniecki family palace in Nawra, near Toruń, where the future Museum of the Landed Gentry will be established. Conservation and restoration works are currently underway throughout the historic palace and park complex. The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Centre for Cultural Heritage, which is overseeing the project, estimates that the overall investment is approximately 80 per cent complete. Construction and conservation works are scheduled for completion in 2027.

The Nawra estate, which until recently had fallen into severe disrepair, is gradually regaining the appearance of a well-maintained country residence, although restoration work is still in progress. The main palace building is now approximately 75 per cent complete. Contractors continue work on the exterior façade. Custom-made windows have recently been installed, while the installation of bespoke doors is currently being prepared. Architectural details, designed in consultation with heritage conservation authorities, will soon be installed both inside the building and on its façade. Conservation specialists are also continuing the restoration of original wall paintings discovered last year, while parquet flooring is being laid on the upper floor.

In both side wings, where parquet flooring and ceramic tiles have already been installed in bathrooms and sanitary facilities, interior finishing works are continuing. At the gardener’s house, specialists are completing the roof covering and applying exterior plaster. Construction work at the former greenhouse is nearing completion, with glass panels due to be installed shortly.

Considerable work also remains in the palace park. So far, mature trees have undergone conservation treatment and necessary removals have been carried out. The site has been prepared for new planting, both ponds have been cleaned and deepened, retention tanks for the irrigation system have been installed, selected trees have been transplanted and additional trees planted. Work continues on the irrigation network as well as the system of paths and walkways. The remaining tasks include installing electrical infrastructure and lighting, planting fruit trees and establishing a wildflower meadow.

The Palace in Nawra, one of the region’s finest examples of Neoclassical architecture, was built between 1798 and 1805 for Konstanty Kruszyński and later remodelled for the Sczaniecki family, who lived on the estate until the outbreak of the Second World War. In the summer of 2022, the Sczaniecki family officially transferred ownership of the palace and park to the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Regional Self-Government. Marshal Piotr Całbecki entrusted the restoration of the estate to the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Centre for Cultural Heritage, a regional cultural institution.
