Regional Film Fund. Good Boy Screening at Niebieski Kocyk Cinema
The latest film by Jan Komasa has impressed critics in the United States. The thriller, produced with the support of the Kujawy Pomorze Film Fund, will be screened at the Niebieski Kocyk cinema in Toruń.
The screening begins at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 16 June, at the cinema located in the Od Nowa Club on Gagarina Street 37a. Tickets cost PLN 12 and PLN 15.
Good Boy was released in Polish cinemas on 6 March. On the same day, it premiered in the United States under the title Heel. The thriller tells the story of Tommy, a young man immersed in a world of drugs and violence. One day, the 19-year-old is kidnapped by a mysterious man who wants to rehabilitate him and turn him into a “good boy.”
The cast features major international stars. The lead role is played by Anson Boon, whose work audiences may know from 1917 and the miniseries Pistol, about the history of the Sex Pistols. Stephen Graham, known for Adolescence, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Irishman, plays Chris, the man who kidnaps Tommy. Chris’s wife is portrayed by Andrea Riseborough, who received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in To Leslie.
Reviews of Komasa’s latest film have appeared in prestigious American newspapers. Robert Abele of the Los Angeles Times described it as “a disturbing thriller” and praised the performances: “The agile Boon reveals the vulnerability of his swaggering character to stunning effect. Tommy is a difficult role, but Boon knows how to make it revealing and suspenseful. Graham, as the sensitive patriarch, is intriguingly different from the haunting father he portrayed in Adolescence, while the wonderfully eccentric Riseborough makes excellent use of the severity of her quiet mother character. Monika Frajczyk and Kit Rakusen are also perfectly cast.”
Abele concluded by comparing the film to the early works of Roman Polański.
Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times also reviewed the film positively, calling it “absurdly compelling” and awarding it the prestigious Critic’s Pick distinction. She highlighted Anson Boon’s “electrifying” performance, praised the nuanced acting of Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough, and commended the stark cinematography by Michał Dymek. She described the film as “thought-provoking” and as a portrayal of “social decay wrapped in the conventions of a psychological thriller.”
Jan Komasa is the creator of such acclaimed films as Suicide Room, Warsaw ’44, and Corpus Christi, which was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best International Feature Film category. Good Boy is his second English-language production. In November of last year, his English-language debut, the psychological thriller Anniversary, premiered, featuring Hollywood stars Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler.
Among the producers of Good Boy is one of Poland’s most distinguished filmmakers, Jerzy Skolimowski – director, screenwriter, actor, poet, and painter. In 2022, he received the Pola Negri Film Award of the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region for Lifetime Achievement.
