Pulmonology at the Highest Level
The Marshal’s Pulmonology Centre (CP), which recently installed newly purchased high-class equipment in the hospital’s Department of Pathomorphology, is intensively preparing for investments planned for this year worth over PLN 30 million. These include purchases of equipment and apparatus for the oncology segment and an ambitiously planned digital transformation of the facility. In January, the hospital launched the first highly specialized spasticity treatment centre in our region, whose mission is comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of this type of disorder.
“Our Regional Pulmonology Centre is an excellently managed facility, one of the best hospitals of this kind in the country, with modern diagnostics and therapy and outstanding staff who can be a model of knowledge and skills, but also empathy toward patients. For many years it operated in difficult conditions, but that is now the past. Together with its management, we are now ensuring that diagnostics and therapy here are at a world-class level,” emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
“These investments are an important step in improving the quality of our services. Thanks to them, we are gaining broader capabilities for modern diagnostics and are realistically shortening patients’ waiting time for treatment. I am also very pleased about obtaining funds for digital transformation. They will not only strengthen our cybersecurity but will also enable the implementation of an e-registration system that will soon become standard. Expanding IT infrastructure is one of our key development directions – both in terms of improving the quality of services provided and streamlining the management of a facility that operates in two locations,” summarizes Mariola Brodowska, Director of the Pulmonology Centre.
The new specialized equipment for histopathological examinations and molecular diagnostics, worth PLN 1.5 million, will replace and supplement the equipment currently used by the Department of Pathomorphology. The names of these devices will mean little to most of us, so there is no point in listing them – suffice it to say that they essentially form a technological line used to conduct analyses. The lion’s share of the funding comes from the National Recovery Plan, with the remaining 10 percent provided by the regional self-government.
Investments planned for this year are also primarily purchases. Equipment and apparatus serving oncology patients will cost PLN 15 million – this includes outfitting the endoscopy lab, the radiology department, and the Department of Pathomorphology. Nearly the same amount will be spent on digital transformation initiatives – the hospital plans to integrate and expand internal systems, digitize medical records, implement solutions using artificial intelligence algorithms, connect to the central medical data repository, and undertake measures to improve cybersecurity.
Investment plans also include the renovation and replacement of elevators (PLN 1 million).
In December 2022, one of the wings of the hospital complex – rebuilt, expanded, and raised by one floor – was put into service. It now houses the Respiratory Failure Treatment Unit and the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Unit, as well as the admissions room with an isolated zone for patients with infectious diseases.
The Regional Spasticity Treatment Centre launched in January offers interdisciplinary care for patients suffering from muscular spasticity resulting from or occurring in the course of serious nervous system diseases, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and brain and spinal cord injuries. Experienced specialists provide precise diagnostics, assessment of symptom severity and its impact on the patient’s quality of life, and individually tailored, multi-faceted therapy (pharmacotherapy, including botulinum toxin injections, rehabilitation, and supportive treatment) supplemented with orthopedic supplies, a dedicated rehabilitation program, and physiotherapy.
