Green Avenues Along Regional Roads

We are continuing the Marshal’s program to restore roadside tree avenues. In the spring, trees will be planted, among other places, along the Chełmno bypass, on sections of regional road no. 551 in Unisław (Chełmno County), and on regional road no. 251 between Barcin and Pakość (Żnin and Inowrocław Counties). In the autumn, more roads will be lined with rows of trees.

“We are restoring green avenues to compensate for environmental losses that accompany various investments. Trees are a natural form of environmental protectionthey shield against wind and erosion, provide shelter for insects and birds, and help maintain soil fertility. The planting program is an example of combining road infrastructure development with care for nature and the heritage of our region. We are working to give more regional roads a green character. A total of PLN 18 million has been allocated for this purpose,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

More than 200 sycamore maples will be planted along regional road no. 550, which includes the Chełmno bypass. The Chełmno route was opened in the previous decade and was co-financed with EU funds from our Regional Operational Programme 2007-2013. Along the nearly four-kilometer stretch, a bicycle path was also constructed.

A section of regional road no. 551 in Raciniewo (Chełmno County) will also gain a greener character. The entrance to the Unisław municipality from the Bydgoszcz side will be lined with over one hundred Norway maples (110 trees). This road was also modernized with the support of European funds, and cooperation between local governments made it possible to build a safe pedestrian and bicycle route.

Trees will once again decorate the roadside of regional road no. 251 between Barcin (Żnin County) and Pakość (Inowrocław County). A total of 149 maples will provide shade not only for the rebuilt roadway but also for new bicycle paths created in cooperation with both municipalities.

A tender procedure for the implementation of the plantings, scheduled for spring, is currently underway. The project includes site preparation, delivery of large saplings (at a height of 1.3 meters, the trees must have a trunk circumference of at least 20 centimeters), planting, maintenance (fertilization and watering), and the construction of retention basins. Funding will come from the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze for 2021-2027.

Previously, new trees were planted along regional road no. 553 Toruń – Wybcz in Toruń County and along regional road no. 266 Ciechocinek – Zakrzewo in Aleksandrów County. Preparations are underway for further tenders to plant trees along additional roads.

Record Road Expenditures

PLN 2 billion will be allocated to the regional road modernization program in the coming years. Under the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze 2021-2027 (FEdKP 2021-2027), our regional program for the new financial perspective, €136 million will be dedicated to road investments, including our regional bypass construction program. For part of the road infrastructure expansion projects, we will also use central government funding obtained (approximately PLN 170 million for bypasses and about PLN 450 million for the expansion of other roads).
