On Thursday, We Welcome Blood Donors
Despite advances in medicine, it has not yet been possible to create a substance that can fully replace human blood. For the first time this year, on 19 February, a special mobile unit of the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Bydgoszcz—where blood can be donated free of charge—will be stationed at Theatre Square, next to the Marshal’s Office building in Toruń.
“Your blood can save another person’s health or life. I appeal to everyone who is able to do so to take part in our campaign,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
Who can become a donor?
Blood may be donated by healthy adults up to the age of 65 who show no symptoms of infection and weigh at least 50 kilograms. Donors must bring a photo ID confirming their identity and their PESEL number. In the 24 hours preceding donation, donors should drink about 2 litres of fluids (mineral water, juices), be well rested, eat a light meal, eliminate animal fats from their diet if possible, limit smoking, and refrain from drinking alcohol (also on the day before donation).
Blood donation is safe—only single-use equipment is used, so there is no risk of infection with blood-borne viruses. A visit to the mobile unit begins with completing a questionnaire and registration, followed by a blood sample and a medical examination. The donation itself takes about 5–10 minutes (most often one unit of whole blood, i.e. 450 ml, is collected). Afterward, donors rest for 15 minutes and receive a caloric equivalent (chocolate and juice). More information is available on the website of the Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre.
The mobile unit of the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre will be parked in front of the Marshal’s Office on Thursday, 19 February. Staff will be on duty from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In 2026, blood collection in front of the Marshal’s Office will also take place on:
