On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, celebrated in February, employees of the regional self-government administration of the voivodeship—female and male officials alike—as well as staff of regional self-government organizational units and local governments, and members of the Youth Regional Assembly, are today (17 February) taking part in the annual dictation, traditionally bristling with difficult words and expressions. The text was written by Prof. Małgorzata Gębka-Wolak and Prof. Iwona Kaproń-Charzyńska of Nicolaus Copernicus University, who will also deliver a lecture on changes in official Polish. The event is held under the honorary patronage of Elżbieta Piniewska, President of the Regional Parliament.

We are celebrating Mother Language Day in this way for the eleventh time. Attractive prizes await the regional champions of Polish orthography.

The lecture prepared by linguists from Nicolaus Copernicus University, titled “Official Polish: Past and Present,” draws attention to changes taking place in the language of official communication. The lecture will be followed by language and stylistic workshops.
