Opera Nova: expansion nearing completion

The expansion of Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz is one of the most important cultural investments in our region and one of the key investments in the city itself. The construction works at Marszałka Focha Street, scheduled for completion in December 2026, have attracted great interest from city residents and music lovers alike.

“To be able to participate in artistic events of the highest standard, we must have cultural institutions housed in facilities that meet modern requirements. Culture and its creators have always needed generous patrons—this was true in the past and remains true today,” emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

“The so-called fourth ring, being built to expand the functionality of the Opera Nova complex, refers to the original competition-winning architectural concept from 1962. Its author, Professor Józef Chmiel, envisioned a building composed of three interpenetrating rings, complemented by a fourth ring connected to them. (…) The current investment therefore completes a long-term project—launched in 1973 and officially concluded in 2006. (…) [As part of this project,] the construction of a two-level underground car park beneath the new city square in front of the main entrance will significantly improve convenience for audiences attending performances and other events, which will certainly become a positive distinguishing feature among similar venues in Poland,” stresses Director Maciej Figas.

In the new four-storey wing of the complex—the so-called fourth ring—there will be, in addition to a chamber opera hall (with an orchestra pit for a 70-member ensemble and seating for 500 spectators), an exhibition space and a cinema hall. A viewing terrace overlooking the Brda River is also planned. The newly built rotunda will have 6,000 square meters of floor space and a volume of 40,000 cubic meters. At the same time, a much-needed two-level underground car park—scheduled for completion in mid-2026—will provide 212 parking spaces. The total value of the investment exceeds PLN 190 million.

Intensive finishing and installation works are currently underway in both new facilities. These include the installation of the striking glass façade of the fourth ring, plastering works, floor construction, installation of ventilation and lighting systems, cabling, as well as the delivery of panels and cladding for the parking area.
