Regional Children’s Hospital – a Higher Standard in Diagnostics
Laboratories and treatment rooms equipped with modern devices are being built in the Diagnostic Center for Organ Imaging of the Provincial Children’s Hospital (WSD) in Bydgoszcz, an investment worth 83 million PLN. Today (20 November), in the presence of Marshal Piotr Całbecki, an agreement was signed between the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Development Fund, represented by President Kamila Radziecka, and the Regional Children’s Hospital, represented by Director Edward Hartwich and Deputy Medical Director Dr. Danuta Kurylak. The nearly 15-million-PLN loan will allow the hospital to finance its own contribution to the project. Construction will be completed at the beginning of 2027.
“Quick diagnosis is the key to effective treatment, especially for children, in whom many diseases progress much faster than in adults. Hospitals must be continuously modernized, which means purchasing state-of-the-art equipment and medical devices, as well as expanding hospital complexes,” emphasizes Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The investment includes the construction of a three-storey building (3,500 square meters of usable space), which will house state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratories (two MRI rooms, a cytometry lab, an endoscopy lab, and an ultrasound lab transferred from the existing building), as well as a two-level underground parking area with 93 spaces. Adults will also be able to undergo tests at the Center.
The project is co-financed by the European Funds for Kujawy and Pomorze regional program.
The complex of the Regional Children’s Hospital in Bydgoszcz was built practically from scratch and opened in 2015. Its construction and initial purchase of medical equipment were among the largest projects of this type in the country. It was also the most spectacular undertaking of the first part of our medical centenary package—the marshal’s program for modernizing the region’s key medical facilities.
For years, the WSD has ranked among the best hospitals in the country and is one of the few Polish centers specializing in surgical and oncological treatment of hard-to-reach head and neck tumors, particularly skull base tumors. The interdisciplinary team, consisting of a pediatric oncology and hematology specialist, a neurosurgeon, a maxillofacial surgeon, and a pediatric ENT specialist, takes on exceptionally complex cases. Thanks to many years of multispecialty collaboration, the hospital receives the most difficult cases from across Poland. In 2020, the ENT–neurosurgery team successfully performed the first brainstem auditory implant surgery in Central and Eastern Europe. Specialized skull base procedures are performed regularly at our Regional Children’s Hospital in Bydgoszcz. In 2023, WSD specialists carried out an extremely complex surgery to remove an extensive skull base tumor in an eight-year-old boy.
