We’re Waiting for Blood Donors on Thursday

Despite advances in medicine, it has not yet been possible to create a substance that could fully replace human blood. On Thursday (20 November), a special mobile unit from the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Center in Bydgoszcz, where blood can be donated voluntarily, will be stationed at Teatralny Square in front of the Marshal’s Office in Toruń. The event is repeated every third Thursday of the month.

Your blood can save another person’s health or life. I appeal to everyone who is able to do so to take part in our campaign,” says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Who can become a donor?

Blood can be donated by adults up to 65 years of age who are healthy, show no signs of infection, and weigh at least 50 kilograms. Anyone coming to donate blood should bring a photo ID with proof of identity and a PESEL number. In the 24 hours before donating blood, it is recommended to drink about 2 liters of fluids (mineral water, juices), be well-rested, eat a light meal, avoid animal fats as much as possible, limit smoking, and refrain from drinking alcohol (including the day before donation).

Donating blood is safe – only single-use equipment is used, eliminating the risk of blood-borne infections. A visit to the mobile unit begins with filling out a questionnaire and registering, followed by a blood sample and a medical examination. The donation itself takes about 5–10 minutes (usually one unit of whole blood, i.e. 450 ml, is collected), after which donors rest for 15 minutes and then receive a caloric equivalent (chocolates and juice). More information is available on the website of the Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Center.

The mobile unit of the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Center will be parked in front of the Marshal’s Office on Thursday, 20 November. Staff will be available from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

In 2025, another blood donation day at the Marshal’s Office square will take place on 18 December.

According to the Statistical Office in Bydgoszcz, there are more than 33,000 honorary blood donors in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship — nearly 2 percent of the region’s population.
