On Friday, October 3, Marshal Piotr Całbecki took part in a press conference held by the authorities of the General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation in Toruń, alongside renowned British writer and historian Clare Mulley, author of the book Agent Zo, whose Polish translation has just been released nationwide.

Agent Zo is a gripping biography of Elżbieta Zawacka, a Toruń-born Polish heroine of the Second World War who remained tied to the city throughout her life. Zawacka was a resistance fighter, soldier of the Home Army, courier of the Polish Underground State, and emissary to the Polish government-in-exile in London. She also took part in the Warsaw Uprising, suffered as a political prisoner during the Stalinist era, and was later honored with the Virtuti Militari Cross and the Order of the White Eagle. Beyond her military service, she was a scholar and social activist. Clare Mulley, who conducted her research both in Poland and the United Kingdom, is a specialist in biographies of remarkable women. One of her earlier works focused on another Polish heroine, Krystyna Skarbek, the aristocrat who served in British intelligence.

During the meeting at the General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation, Marshal Całbecki emphasized the importance of remembering wartime heroes who displayed extraordinary courage and devotion to their homeland. He also announced that the Kuyavian-Pomeranian regional government had reached a preliminary agreement with the City of Toruń to provide financial support to the Foundation in its mission to promote the region’s history and distinguished figures.

The press conference was also attended by Toruń Mayor Paweł Gulewski, Foundation President Dorota Zawacka-Wakarecy, and Foundation Council Chairman Jan Wyrowiński.

Clare Mulley is currently promoting her book in Poland. Over the weekend, she held author meetings in Toruń and Bydgoszcz.
