45 years ago, the August Agreements were signed

Nationwide celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements are underway. Today (August 29), Marshal Piotr Całbecki laid flowers at the Ludziom Solidarności Regionu plaque in Toruń’s Old Town and at the monument of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, the historic chaplain of Solidarity. In the afternoon, the traditional meeting of August veterans will take place in Przysiek near Toruń.

The gathering in the gardens of the Caritas academic residence will begin with a solemn outdoor Holy Mass. The program also includes the awarding ceremony of the Marshal of the Voivodeship Medals Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis, granted to activists of the first Solidarity movement and the democratic opposition of the 1970s and 1980s, in recognition of their contribution to the struggle for independence and the defense of human rights. There will also be a concert of patriotic songs and author meetings with Rev. Dr. Michał Damazyn and photographer Lech Różański. Rev. Dr. Michał Damazyn will be signing the fourth volume of his Kujawsko-Pomorskie Dictionary, featuring biographical entries of the Medal recipients. Lech Różański will speak about the beginnings of Toruń’s Solidarity in 1980–1981, documented in his photo album.

The event is hosted by Marshal Piotr Całbecki, Chairman of the Provincial Consultative Council for Anti-Communist Opposition Activists Jan Wyrowiński, and leaders of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie structures of the Solidarity trade union, Sebastian Gawronek and Tomasz Jeziorek.

An author’s evening with Lech Różański also took place yesterday at the Copernican Library. The event, chaired by Jan Wyrowiński on behalf of the Social Committee Solidarni – Toruń Remembers, accompanied the promotion of the second edition of the album Toruń Solidarity 1980–1981. Thanks to the committee’s efforts, this edition was published. The author came from Canada, where he has lived for many years, to attend the promotion.

The celebrations also include solemn patriotic Masses in Bydgoszcz and Toruń on Sunday (August 31), as well as a concert titled Paths of Freedom, prepared by the Pomeranian Philharmonic, on Monday (September 1).
