
A weekend in culture
The Van Gogh Festival in Brzózki (Nakło County) invites visitors to embark on a journey into a world inspired by the paintings of Vincent van Gogh. the Archaeological Museum in Biskupin invites you to visit a medieval settlement, and for music lovers: concerts of the International Festival Nova Muzyka i Architektura (New Music and Architecture), Chopin’s works in Szafarnia and Osiecka’s songs at the Musical Theatre. We invite you to weekend cultural events in the region.
The award-winning violinist Sunjae Ok and the Toruń Symphony Orchestra conducted by Adam Banaszak will perform in the concert ‘Nature x Cosmos’, which will take place on Saturday (16 August) at the Jordanki Cultural and Congress Centre as part of the 29th International Festival Nova Muzyka i Architektura. The programme includes works by Adam Wesołowski, Mieczysław Karłowicz, Władysław Żeleński and Wojciech Kilar. Also as part of the festival, on Sunday (17 August), there will be three violin recitals, ‘Paganini/Lipiński/Wieniawski’, featuring young virtuosos Carla Marrero Martinez, Wonbeen Chung and Sunjae Ok. They will be accompanied on the piano by Radosław Kurek and Bartłomiej Wezner. The event is held under the honorary patronage of Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
Film music, songs from musicals and operetta arias will be performed on Friday (15 August) by mezzo-soprano Justyna Gęsicka and Capella Bydgostensis conducted by Bernard Chmielarz in the ‘Concert on the Water’ taking place on a ferry in Nieszawa.
Organised for the first time, the Van Gogh Festival is an event combining four fields of art (literature, painting, film and music) in the spirit of Vincent van Gogh’s work, which will take place in Brzózki on the Noteć River – an artistic village in the municipality of Szubin (Nakło County) known for murals inspired by the Dutch painter’s works, which have been painted on the walls of houses for several years. During the two-day festival (15 and 16 August), the programme includes a meeting with film critic Tomasz Raczek and actor Robert Gulaczyk, a lecture by Prof. Michał Rusinek, a concert by Andrzej Sikorowski, and literary, art and video art workshops. The main partner of the event is the regional government of Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship.
The Chopin Centre in Szafarnia invites you to the seventh concert in the series “Holidays with Chopin”. On Sunday (17 August), pianist Bartosz Skłodowski will perform.
As part of the summer series ‘Journey Through Time’, the Archaeological Museum in Biskupin invites you to the early Piast village of Bolesław Chrobry’s times. From Friday to Sunday (15-17 August), there will be guided tours, workshops on ancient crafts and historical reenactments.
On Saturday (16 August), the Musical Theatre in Toruń will host the concert ‘Osiecka… Krajewski’. Agnieszka Osiecka’s songs will be performed by the Gentlemen’s Jazz band, and her poetry will be presented by actress Marzena Kopczyńska.
The Vistula Festival arrives in Toruń on Thursday (14 August). Referring to the traditions of old timber floating and rafting crafts, the next edition of the festival recalls the old life of the inhabitants of Vistula towns and the customs of rafters. The programme includes an outdoor performance of ‘Frycowe – flisacki chrzest’ (Frycowe – the rafters’ baptism), sailing regattas, cruises for the public, photography workshops, educational and culinary stands, an outdoor photography session and concerts. For the first time (on 14 August), the Congress of Local Governments on the Vistula River will be held. There will also be a traditional boat parade. In the following days (15–17 August), the Vistula Festival will take place in Solec Kujawski, Fordon, Bydgoszcz, Chełmno and Grudziądz.
The regional government runs 17 cultural institutions, which offer a wide range of cultural activities.
