On Friday (18 July), the first honey harvest of the year took place in the apiary located on the roof of the Marshal’s Office. This year, we will obtain 100 kilograms of sweet and aromatic multi-flower honey from five bee colonies. Marshal Piotr Całbecki, who is a keen beekeeper in his private life and also has an apiary near his home, took part in the honey harvest.

‘The presence of beehives on the roof of the Marshal’s Office has an educational dimension,’ emphasised Marshal Piotr Całbecki. “We draw attention to the fact that without bees there would be no life on earth. We will also improve biodiversity while showing that the urban environment is conducive to these insects, and the honey obtained is of the highest quality.

Each hive is home to about 30,000 bees. Tomasz Paul from Gniewkowo, who has been taking care of the Marshal’s apiary for four years, admitted that this year’s season was not easy. The beginning of spring was optimistic, as the bees began collecting nectar in mid-April, but during the May frosts, the honey in the hives decreased. The season was saved by the favourable weather in June, which was conducive to flying.

The honey harvest was an opportunity to replace the queen bee in one of the hives.

This year, we will obtain 100 kilograms of multi-flower honey (mostly from maple and linden nectar) from five hives. The quality of this sweet delicacy, tested by the relevant authorities, is always rated very highly. Honey from the Marshal’s apiary is bottled and used as one of a wide range of promotional items.

The regional government consistently supports beekeepers who maintain biodiversity by running apiaries.
