Blood is especially needed in summer
The holiday season is a time when regular donors give less blood, while hospitals’ demand for this precious medicine increases. On Thursday (17 July), a special ambulance from the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Bydgoszcz, where you can donate blood, will be parked on Teatralny Square in front of the Marshal’s Office in Toruń. We repeat this campaign every third Thursday of the month.
‘Your blood can save the health or life of another person. I appeal to everyone who can do so to take part in our campaign,’ says Marshal Piotr Całbecki.

Who can become a donor?
Blood can be donated by adults up to 65 years of age who are healthy, have no symptoms of infection and weigh at least 50 kilograms. Those wishing to donate blood should have a photo ID and their PESEL number with them. Before donating blood, you should drink about 2 litres of fluids (mineral water, juices) within 24 hours, be well rested, eat a light meal, eliminate animal fats from your diet as much as possible, limit smoking and not drink alcohol (also on the day before donating blood).
Donating blood is safe – only disposable equipment is used for this purpose, so there is no risk of infection with blood-borne viruses. A visit to the ambulance begins with filling out a questionnaire and registration, followed by a blood sample collection and a medical examination. The collection itself takes about 5-10 minutes (usually one unit of whole blood, i.e. 450 ml, is collected), followed by a 15-minute rest, after which the donor receives a caloric equivalent (chocolate and juice). More information is available on the website of the Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre.
The Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre ambulance will be parked in front of the Marshal’s Office on Thursday, 17 July. The staff will be waiting between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
In 2025, blood collection in front of the Marshal’s Office will also take place on:
- 21 August
- 18 September
- 16 October
