On the eve of National Librarians and Libraries Day (7 May), during a provincial celebration attended by Vice-Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska and the President of the Regional Parliament, Elżbieta Piniewska, we honoured people of the book from our region – people who passionately promote reading and support the development of libraries. During the ceremony, Jan Krajewski, president of the Polish Library Association, received a prestigious award: the Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis medal.

 

– Today we are celebrating a double anniversary – the 40th anniversary of Librarians’ Day and the 18th anniversary of the profession being honoured by our regional government. This is an excellent moment to express gratitude for their ongoing commitment to promoting reading and building social ties. I am delighted that representatives from across the region have come to today’s celebrations. I believe that today’s libraries can be not only functional, but also attractive – because ‘he who reads, lives twice,’ said Vice-Marshal Aneta Jędrzejewska.

 

– I remember myself – a nine-year-old girl who walks into the neighbourhood library. A librarian is waiting for me there, and she invites me to join what she calls the ‘library activist’. I feel important then – someone has taken care of me and introduced me to a beautiful world from which I have not left to this day. Thank you so much for being a guide to the world of imagination,’ said President Elżbieta Piniewska during the ceremony.

 

Marshal Piotr Całbecki awarded financial prizes to twelve employees of voivodeship libraries, Książnica Kopernikańska in Toruń and the Dr W. Bełza Voivodeship and City Public Library in Bydgoszcz, as well as four municipal and communal institutions from the voivodeship.

The ceremony honouring the winners will take place at the Wilam Horzyca Theatre in Toruń. At the end, guests will watch a performance of Doctor on the Telephone directed by Piotr Ratajczak.

 

Since 1985, National Librarians and Libraries Day has been celebrated on 8 May. The holiday was established at the initiative of the Association of School Librarians.
