Through traffic will bypass the centre of Radzyń Chełmiński
Preparations for the construction of the bypass of Radzyń Chełmiński in Grudziądz County are gaining momentum. In June, a decision was obtained that will allow the completion of the technical, economic and environmental study (STEŚ). The selected route takes into account both environmental conditions and feedback from residents gathered during public consultations.
“Our road bypass programme is an important part of the ongoing modernisation of the regional road network. Newly built road systems allow us to divert transit traffic out of towns, improving safety and traffic flow, and thus the quality of life of residents,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki.
The 3-kilometre-long bypass will be built to G-class road standards, with a 7-metre-wide carriageway, shoulders, and new safe intersections. The route will bypass Radzyń Chełmiński—including the market square and the ruins of the Teutonic castle—from the south-western side. The starting point will be a roundabout connecting Voivodeship Roads No. 534 and 538 in Fijewo. The route will end at a roundabout intersection with Voivodeship Road No. 543 near Mieczysław Orłowicz Street. Along the way, four standard intersections are planned. The selected variant runs furthest from the town centre and reflects residents’ and local authorities’ demands expressed during consultations.

In Fijewo, a road junction is also planned, which will connect the voivodeship road network with the planned S5 expressway section between Grudziądz and Ostróda.
The preparations are being carried out under a trilateral agreement signed in 2021 between the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region, Grudziądz County, and the municipality and town of Radzyń Chełmiński. In 2022, a contract worth nearly PLN 600,000 was signed with the company Lispus, responsible for preparing the study and obtaining the environmental decision. The recently issued environmental decision allows the study work to be completed this year. At the next design stage, minor route adjustments may still be considered to reduce impacts on private properties. The completed study will serve as the basis for detailed design documentation.
Currently, two important voivodeship roads pass through the centre of Radzyń Chełmiński: No. 534 (Grudziądz–Rypin) and No. 543 (Paparzyn–Brodnica), while Road No. 538 (to Łasin and Nowe Miasto Lubawskie) begins in the town.
Investments in Grudziądz County
Ongoing and planned projects in the region include:
- installation of lighting for pedestrian crossings on Voivodeship Road No. 534 (Grudziądz–Wąbrzeźno–Rypin)
- construction permit obtained for a roundabout in Mełno at the junction of roads No. 533 and 538
- documentation being prepared for resurfacing Voivodeship Road No. 538 (Gruta–Łasin, 4 km section)
- documentation being prepared for resurfacing Voivodeship Road No. 535 (DK16–Rogóźno, 4 km section)
- design work on reconstruction of a bridge in Rożental on Voivodeship Road No. 543

Kujawsko-Pomorskie Bypass Programme
The regional government is steadily increasing funding for design and construction works under its regional bypass programme. It includes road bypasses with a total length of over 70 km. Its implementation in the coming years will cost around PLN 1 billion.
Under the 2021–2027 regional programme, a record EUR 136 million is allocated to road infrastructure development and modernisation. Additionally, PLN 170 million in national funding has been secured for three bypasses in Brodnica, Rypin and Tuchola.
